Hip Pain Q&A

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain could be due to an injury such as a hip fracture, dislocation, or acute soft tissue damage. It’s also often caused by chronic conditions that develop slowly over time. The most common of these hip conditions include:

Bursitis

Bursitis affects the bursae in the hip joint, small sacs of liquid that protect the bones, tendons, and muscles from rubbing together. If something rubs the bursae themselves, they can become inflamed and cause hip pain.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is due to inflammation of the tendons — connective tissues that attach muscles to bones.

Labral tear

Labral tears involve the labrum, a type of cartilage that protects and cushions your hip joint. Labral tears are often caused by repetitive strain but can result from traumatic injury.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a wear-and-tear disease of the joints in which cartilage protecting the ends of the bones in the hip joint erodes. The exposed bones rub against one another, causing inflammation and hip pain.

How is hip pain diagnosed?

At your Holsman Physical Therapy consultation, your provider performs a thorough physical exam, looking at the degree of movement in your hips and how well you can walk.

They also go through your medical history and current symptoms with you, and you may need to go for diagnostic imaging procedures like X-rays. These tests allow your provider to see the internal structure of your hip joint in detail and assess the degree of tissue damage.

After making their diagnosis, your provider designs a personalized treatment plan that uses active and passive physical therapies to optimize your recovery from hip pain.

What physical therapies help with hip pain?

There are numerous approaches that the Holsman Physical Therapy team can use to ease your hip pain, including:

  • Ultrasound
  • Laser therapy
  • Active range of motion (AROM) exercises
  • Active assistive range of motion – therapist-assisted AROM
  • Gait or walking training
  • Isometrics (muscle contraction without joint movement)
  • Isotonics (muscle contraction with resistance)
  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Maitland/Kaltenborn mobilizations
  • Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
  • Posture training
  • Progressive resistive exercises
  • Stretching/flexibility exercise
  • Cryotherapy
  • Heat therapy
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Whirlpool hydrotherapy
  • Occupational therapy

These treatments achieve outstanding results for hip pain patients, reducing your need for strong painkilling medication and helping to heal damaged soft tissues in the joint.
